Thanks for the help guys. My VTX is 2007 with 2,000 kilometres on the clock. Had the first service. This is not the 1st gear clunk-I actually like that noise-this is another bang/click/clunk when I let the clutch out after engaging 1st gear. Quite audible. Can hear it over the engine noise. Cheers.
While driving in a steady slow speed parade type situation a clunk-clunk noise from the driveline may be heard when depressing and releasing the clutch pedal, between shifts or quickly depressing and releasing the throttle.
Sometimes when I'm in 2nd or 3rd and get the rpms up to about 2500 and left off the gas all of a sudden, when the car jerks a bit it makes the clunking noise once or twice. It also happens when I downshift into 2nd or 3rd and don't rev match perfectly or when I shift from 1st to 2nd and start to let out the clutch.

It doesn’t happen with all motorcycles, and the damage it can do depends on how loud is the “loud clunk” that you hear, and if the bike jerks ahead when the 1st gear is engaged but the clutch disengaged (clutch lever pulled).

Re: Clunking noise while reversing There are a lot of posts about this issue already. There are two possibilities from memory. One is that the car has been wet and the bang is the brake calipers releasing while the other is to do with the tailshaft and I believe Toyota just apply a shit load of grease to resolve.

When rolling to a stop with the clutch disengaged, the tranny gears are not under load. Then, after stopping, and you are ready to go again, you release the clutch.
